How to tell if a plastic bucket is food grade?

When it comes to storing or handling food, using the right container is crucial. Not all plastic buckets are created equal—some are safe for food use, while others are not. So, how do you tell if a plastic bucket is food grade? It’s an important question, especially for those in food production, catering, farming, or even home use.

First, check for labeling on the bucket. A true food grade plastic bucket often includes symbols or markings that indicate it's safe for food. Look for the “food safe” symbol, which is usually a cup and fork icon. Some buckets also carry a recycling number—food grade buckets are commonly made from HDPE (high-density polyethylene), which is marked as number “2” inside a triangle. However, not all #2 plastics are food grade, so the recycling number alone is not enough.

Next, read any text printed or molded onto the bucket. If it says “BPA-free,” “NSF approved,” or “FDA compliant,” it’s more likely to be safe for storing food. A food grade plastic tub will also be free of dyes or recycled plastic, which can contain contaminants not suitable for food contact.

Color also plays a role. While color itself doesn’t determine food safety, most food-grade buckets are white or translucent. Colored buckets, unless clearly marked as food safe, may contain harmful additives used in the dye.

Smell is another giveaway. If the plastic has a strong chemical odor or smells like paint or soap, it’s likely not meant for food. A food grade plastic bucket with screw lid should have no strange smells and should seal tightly to prevent contamination.

Food grade plastic refers to plastic materials that undergo strict regulation to ensure they're safe for food storage. The shape, size, and color of a bucket are irrelevant as long as the bucket is made from approved food grade plastic material.

Identifying a food grade bucket involves more than just a quick glance. Look for the food-safe symbol, check material type, avoid reused or unknown containers, and when in doubt, don't hesitate to contact us. Choosing a proper food grade plastic bucket or food grade plastic tub ensures that your food remains safe and uncontaminated—whether you’re preserving homegrown vegetables or managing commercial food operations.
